Richard Filz was born in Wr. Neustadt. After the final exam, the Matura, he studied drum set and Latin percussion at the University of Music in Vienna with Prof. Fritz Ozmee at the Music Academy Of Vienna with Prof. Grassmann. In 1991 he passed the exam for the Diploma for Jazz Percussion with distinction. He also attended the “Drummers Collective New York”. In 2008 he passed the Jazz drumming master exam at the Conservatory Vienna University (M.A.)

He is co-author of the “World Music Ensemble” volume "Cuba" (Universal Edition/2000); author of "Vocal Percussion 1-3" (Universal Edition 2002/03), "Rap, Rhythm & Rhyme - Vocal Percussion in der Klasse (UE 2006), "Rhyth:MIX 1 +2 - Rhythmisches Klassenmusizieren" (Helbling 2008/2009), "Rhythmus für Kids 1 + 2" (UE 2008/2010), "Magic Groove Box" (Helbling 2010) and of the paperback editions "Groove Karaoke" (UE 2003) and "Rhythm Coach Level 1 + 2" (UE 2004/2007); 2009 he published the educational DVD "Vocal Percussion Basics" (UE 2009). publications in several music periodicals (Drum Heads, Pamina, Mip Journal, Klasse Musik, Musik & Unterricht...)
R.F. is the leader and initiator of the ensemble “Richard Filz Geräuschkünstler “, who were awarded several prizes ( The Austrian music school promotion prize in 1998, and he was the prize winner of JEUNESSE “find it” in 2000). He is the leader of the “Walk & Groove” ensemble "Die Dorftrommler". In 2005 he founded the multicultural percussion /vocal group “Rhythm Xing”. Since 2006 he has had many solo performances of the programme “ur:laut”. 2009 he started the a cappella project: "Richard Filz & Acoustic Instinct".
Since 1997 R.F. has been teaching at the J.H. music academy in Eisenstadt, at the music universities in Vienna, Graz and Salzburg, and has been lecturing on an international scale.
In 2003 he was the prize winner of the cultural award of Lower Austria.
In 2006 he was awarded the first prize of culture by the city of Wr. Neustadt
In 2008 he was awarded the VDS mediaprice for "Rap, Rhythm & Rhyme"
